Cosmetic surgery had its beginnings in the early 20th century, using techniques that evolved from the first two World Wars and the Viet Nam era. The ethics of medicine and surgery were different at that time. Advertising was looked down upon and surgeons were taught to become masters of their craft, slowly building their reputations by word of mouth in response to good results. Advertising changed everything and caught the attention of entrepreneurs. Many untrained doctors avoided the scrutiny of hospitals by performing extensive procedures in their offices, and deaths from cosmetic surgery became almost commonplace. South Florida was the epicenter of this new phenomenon and if it weren’t so serious it would have been comical. The media accounts gave the impression they were holding tryouts for the Darwin Awards. Patients selected their surgeon, not on the basis of training, experience, reputation and expertise, but rather on their medical marketing campaign. This is a completely fictional account inspired by some of those true stories written by a renowned and highly respected plastic surgeon with a large practice of many years in South Florida, one of the top centers of plastic surgery in America.

As a fellow plastic surgeon in south Florida I was eager to read this book. Dr. Persoff was one of the first plastic surgeons I met when I first came to start a practice here 27 years ago. Well respected by his peers, his personal perspective on the negative influences of greed and unethical business practices on the profession of cosmetic plastic surgery is poignant. I found this book very informative, interesting and fun. I live in Boca Raton, Fl where plastic surgery is very popular. there is so much talk about this doctor and that doctor and who is the best etc. I think before deciding on a doctor everyone should read this boo it is very enlightening.
A great read from an expert in the field. Great characters and situations, well developed and resolved. The only disturbing part about this book of "fiction" is how close some of the situations are to what really happens. Enjoy the book but remember all those characters are out there waiting for someone naive enough to fall into their lair. Trust Me I'm A Plastic Surgeon
Although Nightmare Spa was written as a fiction tale, unfortunately the saying "life is stranger than fiction "was never more appropriate .
As a plastic surgeon practicing in Miami for nearly 30 years, a lot of what Dr Persoff in the book has occurred in our fair city. The epidemic of Doc in the Box cosmetic centers which appeared in the 90's and continue to exist in South Florida has created an environment where anything is possible.
Hilarious as the story is, it should be a heads up to anyone considering surgery in one of these places.

What a timely book! With all the plastic surgery going on and all the bad results we see every day, this book is a real
eye-opener. It's a must read for anyone contemplating surgery, as well as being frankly entertaining for anyone. I couldn't put it down.
It's the first time a plastic surgeon gave an inside view of what could only have been written by an authority such as Dr. Persoff.
I commend him for his courage.
I just finished reading Dr. Persoff’s book, Nightmare Spa and found that I could not put it down. It reads like a thriller. However, it is much more than sex and bad surgery. It is a light that shines on a world much darker than I could have imagined, and far more familiar to doctors like Myron than me. I was actually sorry when I finished reading it,
The end came too quickly. Thank you for writing the book. It was entertaining and witty
with some very serious advice for people contemplating cosmetic surgery.
